Internal radiation therapy: known as b rachytherapy, is a method used to deliver high dose radiation to a small volume of tissue.It is usually given on an outpatient basis in a hospital or clinic, five days a week for a number of weeks. External radiation therapy: known as e xternal beam radiotherapy, is delivered from a machine known as a linear accelerator. Radiotherapy can be delivered in many different ways from outside (externally) or inside (internally) the body. Treatment can be delivered via external beams from an x-ray like machine (external radiotherapy) or via devices or implants placed inside the patient (internal radiotherapy or brachytherapy). There are a number of treatment types and delivery methods. In other cases it is used to control symptoms caused by the cancer, known as palliative radiotherapy. Radiotherapy is used to treat and cure cancer it is often referred to as curative radiotherapy.
